Perio in Focus: Advancing Clinical Confidence & Care

Lisa Hardill, RDH

Event Description

This course explores a process of care designed to support comprehensive, value-added dental hygiene
services. With a focus on breaking down the critical components of the periodontal assessment,
attendees will learn strategies to simplify staging and grading for periodontitis patients while achieving
greater clarity in decisions related to disease activity. Patient communication, co-diagnosis, treatment
planning, and clinical examples will be emphasized to help dental hygienists confidently translate into
actionable takeaways.

Course Objectives:

1. Review the Dental Hygiene Process of Care (ADPIE) as a best-practice workflow to guide
comprehensive periodontal treatment and decision-making
2. Discuss clinical attachment levels/loss, aka CAL’s, specifically perio charting necessities to ensure
CAL’s are accurately calculated for the AAP staging and grading process.
3. Interpret periodontal assessment findings, to help determine disease activity, the dental hygiene
suggested condition and treatment planning decisions.
4. Summarize the benefits of team-based strategies, best practice communication, the co-diagnosis
between dentist and hygienists to improve patient outcomes, and overall success of the dental
hygiene services provided.
